Recovery Time Objective / Recovery Point Objective
Short definition
Two key metrics for disaster recovery: RPO = how much data you can afford to lose, RTO = how long recovery takes.
Extended definition
RPO defines backup frequency: RPO = 1 hour means a backup every hour. RTO defines recovery speed: RTO = 4 hours means restore service within 4 hours of a disaster. Values depend on system criticality: billing system RPO = 5 min, archive system RPO = 24 hours.
Example & use case
A bank sets RPO = 0 (no data loss) and RTO = 30 minutes, using synchronous replication between two geographic sites.
